These Healthy Chocolate Covered Cookie Dough Balls are vegan, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly. They are the perfect bite to keep stocked in your freezer whenever you’re craving cookie dough but don’t feel like whipping some up and/or want something more wholesome! Plus, you only need 5 main ingredients.
These cookie dough balls contain healthy fat, fiber, and protein… making them a very blood-sugar friendly snack! Aka, no sugar crash or crazy cravings a few hours later which we LOVE. The combination of all three macros is satiating so you’re fuller for longer, satisfied, and not craving more even if you’re physically full. I love to have these prepped in the freezer for a quick grab-and-go snack or treat when my afternoon sweet tooth kicks in. Anybody else always need a little sweet treat after a meal or just me??
We have healthy fats from the almond flour, coconut oil, and non-dairy milk to balance out the carbs from the coconut sugar. To give these bites a boost of protein, you can always add a scoop of collagen! Collagen is a great single-ingredient protein source that blends in with whatever you’re mixing it with, without impacting the texture or flavor. I wouldn’t recommend protein powder in these unless you adjust the wet and dry ingredients (more wet, less dry to start). We’re also keeping these lower sugar by using coconut sugar which is one of my favorite healthier sweeteners! It’s low on the glycemic index so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar as much compared to regular sugars. It helps make things just as sweet though!
And of course, we’re coating everything in chocolate 😝 It’s wholesome for the heart and not to mention, dark chocolate contains magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and much more! You didn’t need any excuse to love and enjoy more chocolate but I just gave you a few health-supporting reasons too… you’re welcome.

Why You’ll Love These
- No bake – Perfect to prep and throw in the freezer to let them set until you’re ready to eat one! I recommend storing these in the freezer and before you have one, let it thaw for a couple of minutes before biting in.
- Minimal ingredients – You probably already have everything or almost everything you need to make these at home! There’s only five main ingredients but they taste so much more decadent than that.
- Dietary friendly – These are gluten free, vegan, paleo, low sugar, and can be refined sugar free depending on what ingredients you use!
What You’ll Need
- Almond flour – I’ve found that this has the best consistency and I haven’t tried making these with other flours. You could always try coconut or oat flour but will need to adjust the wet ingredient amounts because they absorb more!
- Coconut sugar – One of my favorite low sugar sweeteners that gives a rich, caramel, brown sugar-like sweetness! You could use any granulated sweetener.
- Coconut oil – I haven’t tried other substitutions for coconut oil but I would recommend something else with neutral flavor like vegan butter or avocado oil.
- Non-dairy milk of choice – I love using oat or cashew milk for no bake recipes like this because they don’t add any flavor other than a little more sweetness! I usually make my own nut milks at home but if I’m buying store-bought, I make sure to read the labels to check they’re simple and don’t have a ton of additives, sugars, etc. like these from Malk or Elmhurst.
- Vanilla extract
- Sea salt
- Chocolate chips – To keep these vegan and refined sugar free I love chopping up a Hu chocolate bar or Just Date chocolate chips. Other delicious dairy free options are from Enjoy Life!
How To Make
- First, let all ingredients come to room temperature. (Tip: Melt and cool the coconut oil for the dough so it’s cooled off before mixing it with everything. Because this is a no-bake recipe, it’s easier to mix and will turn out better if each ingredient is room temperature first!)
- In a large mixing bowl, mix all of the dough ingredients except chocolate chips until a soft, thick dough forms.
- Fold in one-third cup of chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
- Set the bowl in the freezer for ten minutes. (Tip: This makes it so much easier to roll into balls.)
- Place parchment paper on a plate or baking sheet that will fit in your freezer.
- Roll the dough into balls about one heaping tablespoon in size. Place on the lined plate and set in the freezer for at least one hour.
- When the dough balls are set, make the chocolate coating. Combine one cup of chocolate chips and one teaspoon of coconut oil in a small bowl and microwave for thirty seconds, stir, and repeat until melted and smooth.
- Carefully dip each cookie dough ball into the melted chocolate, coating all sides, and place on the lined plate. (Tip: The chocolate will be hot so be careful! I like to use a fork or two to help guide and cover the cookie dough.)
- Top each with sea salt and set back in the freezer for at least one to two hours.
- Store in the freezer and slightly thaw when ready to eat, enjoy!
Recommended Tools
- Glass mixing bowls
- Silicone spatula – I prefer using silicone when mixing no-bake recipes because they tend to be stickier!
- Stainless steel measuring cups and spoons
- Parchment paper

Shouldn’t you put it in the oven, microwave or something like that for some minutes before the chocolate dipping?? I ask this because it has flour in it. Just wondering as they look delicious!
Hi! There is no need because we are using almond flour, not regular flour 🙂 enjoy!
Too oily
It’s almond flour and that is pretty much just ground up almonds so you don’t need to bake it! 😋
Right! 🙂
can you use coconut flour instead of almond flour?
Coconut flour and almond flour are not a 1:1 ratio so you will probably have different results 🙁
Can you use liquid coconut oil?
Yes, that should work! 🙂
Do you by chance have the macros for these? at least the calories and protein?
Thankyou!
Hi. Do you have the nutritional value of each ball?
Where is the macro break down?
In your ingredients list you have 1 tsp of coconut oil, but in your directions you say to you 2 tsp. Which do you suggest? I’m trying recipe now!
Hi! I am so sorry for the confusion. 1 or 2 tsp will work 🙂 it is just to make the chocolate a little smoother/easier to dip!
Can you use regular sugar instead? This looks amazing – cant wait to try it!
Hi! Yes you can 🙂 hope you love them!
Hi! Should I use refined or unrefined coconut oil? I have unrefined coconut oil in my pantry but it might lead to really strange flavor. I just wanted to know what you used. These look delicious!
Hi! You can use whichever you prefer. If you use unrefined coconut oil, they will have a slight coconut-y flavor which I actually love! But if you don’t want a coconut flavor, I recommend using refined 🙂 hope you love them! I was just snacking on a couple of them from my freezer yesterday!
Ummm, number of calories, please? These look delicious but I’m on a calorie deficit….
How many calories per serving?
12 balls worked out to +- 160 cals each on MyFitness Pal
Thank you for sharing! Hope you enjoyed 🙂
Would it be good if I added no sugar at all aka coconut sugar
I definitely recommend adding at least a bit of sweetener! You could try subbing in a little honey or maple syrup if you prefer 🙂 but if you want a treat that is not very sweet, skipping the sugar will also work!
I tried that before and it tasted like i was eating a coconut. Coconut sugar makes ALL the difference. Trust me.
Can you make it with oat flour ? I am allergic to almonds .
Yes! 🙂
