These Healthy Apple Donuts are gluten free, vegan, and the easiest snack to make for when that afternoon sweet tooth kicks in. You’ll love how these take only minutes to come together, are totally customizable, and a great kid-friendly snack too!
These “donuts” are not meant to completely replace the real thing, I’m all about eating intuitively and having balance in what we eat! I just think these are so fun to make and are a deliciously easy snack or healthy dessert to switch things up. I love that you can change the toppings you put on the donut rings so you can satisfy your sweet tooth and still have a balanced snack!
On these apple donuts I topped with melted chocolate, chopped nuts and natural sprinkles. Other great options would be to add berries, cacao nibs, yogurt, granola, trail mix, or even a date caramel drizzle! Use this recipe as a base and feel free to get creative 💕
Why You’ll Love These
- Minimal ingredients – The main recipe only has apples, chocolate, and coconut oil.
- Quick to make – Because these are no-bake and only have a handful of ingredients, they’ll be ready in no time.
- Endless possibilities – The great thing about these donuts is that you can use any type of apple and toppings that you want! If you want a little more sour, use green apples or if you want something really sweet use honeycrisp or mcintosh. For toppings, you can use anything you have on hand or that will add a nice crunch!
- Dietary friendly – These are naturally gluten free and can easily be made dairy free and vegan depending on what chocolate and toppings you use.
What You’ll Need
- Apple – You can use any kind of apple you like.
- Chocolate chips – I’ve been loving these Hu Gems or baking chocolate chips for a dairy free, refined sugar free option!
- Coconut oil – This is to help smooth the chocolate out when you melt it!
- Toppings of choice – Any nut/seed butter, nuts, shredded coconut, sprinkles, berries, trail mix, granola, cacao nibs, yogurt, etc.
How To Make
- Place the apple on a cutting board with the stem facing up.
- Carefully slice from the core down into about 1/2 inch slices. Continue to do this until the apple is fully sliced.
- Once you’re done slicing, take each piece and use either a bottle cap, knife, or apple corer and take out a center piece (like a donut). (Tip: even if the slice doesn’t have a bit of the core in the middle, still take out the center to match the other slices!)
- Line a tray with parchment paper and place each apple slice on top.
- To melt the chocolate, place the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and repeat until fully melted and smooth.
- Carefully dip each apple slice into the melted chocolate and place on the parchment paper lined tray. (Tip: use a fork to help move the apple ring in the chocolate so you don’t have to use your fingers, it will be hot!)
- Once all of the apple slices are covered in chocolate, add your toppings.
- Set in the freezer for 10-15 minutes, until chocolate is set.
