Healthier Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

This Healthier Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is gluten-free, dairy-free, lower in sugar, and easy to throw together! It’s perfectly *moist* on the inside with crispy yet soft edges, has the perfect amount of sweetness, and is irresistable with those melty chocolate chips.

So, I realized I don’t have a single banana brad recipe on the blog so needed to change that ASAP— and here we are! I have to say it was a great idea on my part because after making this Healthier Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, my house smells ahhhh-mazing.

This recipe is a perfect quick breakfast (bonus points for adding nut butter on top for extra protein + healthy fat) but also makes an amazing afternoon snack and even dessert!

TBH, I am usually a savory kinda gal in the morning (except when it comes to oatmeal/baked oatmeal). So, if I am not having something oat-based, I usually will reach for something like avocado toast for breakfast, a nice hearty bowl for lunch and then by the time the afternoon rolls around I’m in the mood for something sweet! I love having a slice or 2 of this healthier banana bread with a piece of fruit. It totally satisfies my sweet tooth while still providing nutrition from the oats, bananas, eggs, etc.

What you need for this Healthier Chocolate Chip Banana Bread:

  • bananas— of course. The spottier, the better in this case.
  • oat flour— oats blended in a blender or food processor until you reach a flour-like consistency. If you don’t have a blender, you can buy oat flour at most grocery stores or order it online.
  • eggs— as a binder and to make this bread nice and fluffy!
  • coconut sugar— I love using coconut sugar as an unrefined sweetener and also love the rich caramely taste it adds. You can swap this out for regular sugar if you prefer.
  • oil— I used avocado oil but you can also use melted coocnut oil. I recommend avoiding vegetable oils as they are highly processed and can be inflammatory.
  • cinnamon— I love a cinnamon-y flavor with my banana bread. So yummy!
  • sea salt
  • baking soda
  • chocolate chips

Hope you guys love this recipe as much as I do! If you try it, be sure to leave a rating and review! xx

I made this for my kids and they both loved it! I have been trying to find a healthier banana bread for them and this was perfect. Thank you for sharing! Have a great day!

    • That makes me so happy to hear! This is one of my fave recipes of mine for sure so that means a lot! Thank you so much for the comment 🙂

  3. Hi! I’ve made this recipe about 4 times – so easy and delicious thank you! Question – for the times that I’m running low or completely out of oat flour, do you think it’s okay to use almond flour instead? And would I need to change/add any other ingredients using almond flour? Thanks!

    • Hi! I am so glad you love it 🙂 I have not tried almond flour with the recipe yet but I am guessing that it will work! I would just add a little less flour and then keep adding until it looks similar to the classic batter. Let me know how it goes if you give it a try 🙂

So good! Had bananas that needed used but I wanted a healthier alternative. Tastes wonderful, definitely added it to my Pinterest board, and the house smells so good too!

    • So glad you loved it! The smell of the house when making it is definitely one of the best parts! 😉 thank you so much for the comment!

    • I use quite a few different brands! I just look for ones that have only ingredients I understand and would use at home (aka no gums, natural flavors, etc.) – one of the brands I like is Enjoy Life Foods! 🙂

    • So glad you love it! 5 days in the refrigerator and if odd chance some is still left (😉) it freezes really nicely too! Just put a small piece of parchment paper in between each slice, and put into a container or plastic baggie! When you are ready to eat, you can thaw in the microwave for 15-30 seconds, in the refrigerator overnight, or on the counter for 30 mins – 1 hour.

  5. My son and I love making this recipe anytime we’ve got bananas that need used up! Has anyone made it into muffins and can tell me how long they baked them for?

    • I am so glad you and your son love them! I have made them into muffins and they turn out amazing! I can’t remember the exact timing for them as it was a few months ago that I made them into muffins but I would start with around 25-30 and keep a close eye on them! 🙂

  6. I added some crushed pecans to mine. So good, thanks Calla! Been following you for a year or 2 now you are one of my favorites!

    • Sounds DELISH with crushed pecans! I will definitely be adding those next time 🙂 thank you so much, that truly means a ton to hear! Xo

My whole family loved it ! This will be a new staple in our home . I’m always looking for healthy guilt free snacks or meals for our family ! This is one that nailed it . Do you happen to have the nutritional information ?

    • Aw! I am so happy to hear that 🙂 always a win when the whole fam loves!! I typically avoid counting calories / macros and focus more on using quality ingredients which is why I do not include nutritional info— I’m sorry about that 🙁 it should be pretty quick to plug into a nutrition calculator like my fitness pal though! Thanks again for the comment!!

  8. Thank you for this delicious and nutrious banana bread recipe. I have lost count how many times I’ve made this. Tjis is my go to recipe all the time 🥰

  9. Amazing. I just made it.
It’s delicious…. next time I Make I’ll add some walnuts.
    Rise to perfection.
    Wonderful recipe!

  10. Hi! I love this so much — and so do my lil toddlers and husband! That being said, I’m out of coconut sugar tonight. Is there any chance I could use maple syrup instead? What changes would I need to make if any?

    • Hi!! Aw, I am so happy all of you are loving this recipe! I haven’t tried it with maple syrup but I am assuming it would work 🙂 you may just need to add a tiny bit of extra oat flour until you reach the same consistency batter as usual! Otherwise, brown sugar or regular cane sugar work too!! xo

Thanks for that response, Calla! One more question: I’m having trouble locating the nutrition info for this recipe..do you mind sharing? Thanks!

        • I typically don’t provide nutriton information on my recipes because one of my main missions is to encourage people to rely more on how they feel vs. calorie / macro count. With that said, I totally understand some people prefer to have nutrition info— luckily all of my recipes should be super quick/easy to plug into a nutrition calculator such as my fitness pal 🙂 I hope that helps! xx

The taste is very good. I swapped out the coconut sugar for stevia. My husband would like it more moist, I baked for 50 mins, if I bake it less with it be more moist?

    • Hi Leah! So glad you enjoyed! Are you using spotty / brown-ish bananas? This will definitely contribute to moistness!

  12. We love this recipe! And we dont even add in the choco chips! it is that good!!! We just add a splash of vanilla

    • Aw, I am soooo happy to hear you guys love!! Thank you so much for the comment!! xo

  13. We also love your pumpkin bread recipe from your instagram with almond flour! my 6 year old would eat the entire thing if i let her

    • Haha!! Your 6 year old and I have that in common 😂 so happy you love the pumpkin bread too! Definitely 2 of my top faves!

  14. Ok, these were delish!!! First time making them, I definitely will cook longer next time. I cooked 50 minutes and they were a little wet in the middle, but I didn’t even care, they are to die for! I was thinking of adding protein powder in with everything, do I need to lessen any ingredients in order to do so? Any recommendations❤️ thank you so much for sharing this recipe ❤️❤️

    • Hi Sarah, I am so glad you loved! Yes, depending on your oven and exact ingredient brands you use, cooking time can slightly vary 🙂 I think it would be delish with protein powder! I would likely add a bit less oat flour until you reach a similar consistency batter as the first time you made. Let me know how it goes! I’m going to have to try with protein powder next— great idea!!

I was looking for a healthy banana bread recipe and this one stood out because it was soo easy. They turned out soo damn yummmm. My family and myself gobbled all of it in one go! Only thing is mine cooked pretty quickly, was done in around 30-35mins. I was contemplating keeping it in for longer as the recipe suggested but I was afraid they would get too dry. But 30 mins worked just fine for me and they were very moist. Thank you for this!

    • Hi Zahra, thank you so much for this comment! I am so happy you and your family loved it!! One of my favorite recipes 🙂
